Ce que le constitutionnalisme moderne doit à Haïti
Repenser la citoyenneté

The age of revolutions was marked by unprecedented legal and constitutional conceptualisation. The conceptual arsenal developed during this period still forms the cornerstone of many constitutional systems today and serves as an unsurpassed reference point for legal scholarship. However, a careful and critical analysis of the use of these conceptualisations leads us to conclude that there is a damaging Eurocentrism and a tendency to disregard constitutional creations and entire areas of political and legal thought that emerged from this era and this region. Taking Haitian constitutionalism seriously from its early days allows us to highlight these biases. Here, we propose to focus on the study of a specific concept, that of citizenship, to show the contribution of this early constitutionalism that has been forgotten by constitutional science.
